Newsletter I PAST AND PRESENT I September & October 2023

Dear FilmPhilharmonic Friends and Partners,

This season will start celebrating the German heritage of film and music in both its past and its present. Under the baton of Stefanos Tsialis, the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz will perform Gottfried Huppertz‘s original score for Fritz Lang‘s METROPOLIS reconstructed by Frank Strobel in line with the historic restoration of Lang‘s science fiction classic in 2010. Frank Strobel will also be conducting the Orchestre National de Lyon during the live performance of another Weimar Republic masterpiece: Robert Wiene‘s DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI with Stéphane Fromageot‘s gripping composition from 2011.

The Zürich Film Festival celebrates today’s film and music by recognizing German composer and pianist Volker Bertelmann, this year’s Academy Award winner for his original score for Edward Berger‘s war drama IM WESTEN NICHTS NEUES (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT). As part of the Film Music Competition and tonhalleLATE concerts Frank Strobel and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich will premiere a new suite from this innovative and poignant film score accompanied by Bertelmann’s own music for MONTE VERITÀ and PATRICK MELROSE, as well as a selection of pieces by – among others – Dario Marianelli (ATONEMENT), Miklós Rózsa (A TIME TO LOVE AND A TIME TO DIE) and James Horner (AVATAR) under the common motto „resilience“.

Aside from that our agenda offers a lot more to discover, be it Charles Chaplin‘s MODERN TIMES or James Whale‘s FRANKENSTEIN, JAMES BOND or even music for video games at this year’s edition of Film Fest Gent.
