THE GENERAL in Duisburg, Germany

THE GENERAL emerged at the height of Buster Keaton’s fame and ranks as one of the most expensive comedies of the silent film era. The production’s failed reception with audiences and critics brought an end to Keaton’s artistic independence. When his silent films were rediscovered in the late 1950s, THE GENERAL became the center of attention. Since then, the movie counts as one of the most important comedies in film history for its stringent dramaturgical approach and ambitious visual design. In no other film does one find as many tracking shots. In addition, Keaton and Mack personally executed the at times neck-breaking stunts. And when an entire train, including the railway, falls into a river at the end of the film, we might believe that one of the most incredible tricks in film history has just taken place before our eyes when in fact Keaton had a real locomotive land in the Row River in Oregon.
