Comedy

Director Ernst Lubitsch is considered a master of comedy. In THE WILDCAT Lubitsch staged a parody on militarism. War and the military are satirized; soldiers and officers are portrayed as being foolish and absurd. With humor he illustrates a comic love-hate relationship between a womanizing officer and a beautiful thief that has stolen his uniform. Lubitsch appraised THE WILDCAT even though the film was a commercial failure.

The handsome lieutenant Alexis, has a strong reputation as a womanizer. He wishes to marry the commanding officer’s daughter Lilli, yet his bad reputation stands in his way. Soon thereafter Alexis is attacked by a group of robbers whose leader is the beautiful Rischka. She gives Alexis freedom, yet only in return for his uniform. Alexis arrives at his base wearing only underwear and having little dignity left. He seeks revenge against Rischka and the other robbers. His revenge is a success and during the celebrations Alexis is granted Lilli’s hand in marriage. Rischka falls in love with another robber and so there is a happy end for everyone.
